The morning started out with scrambled eggs, bacon, and English muffins. Afterwards the students went on a geology hike and learned about weathering and erosion. For lunch we had sandiwiches, chips and soup. In the afternoon they got to perform exciting experiments as part of wacky science and to learn about ranching and locally grown foods, they got to pick vegetables and fruits and taste freshly-squeezed orange juice. For dinner we had BBQ chicken, beans, corn-on-the-cob and brownies for dessert. The evening activity was a night hike finished up by a campfire, skits and s'mores!
Day two started out with a breakfast of scrambled eggs, tater tots, and ham. After a hike up to the top of the nearby hill, the students returned for a lunch of chicken wings and pizza. There were also salads, soups and celery sticks available. In the afternoon the groups did whichever activities they didn't do yesterday. For dinner we had enchiladas, rice, beans and carrots. The evening activity was square-dancing in the dining hall. We arrived here at Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center a little after 10:00 to a wonderful greeting from the staff.
The students spent the first hour gathering belongings and settling in their cabins followed by some opening activities, safety Rules and expectations. For lunch the menu was Tacos and Soup, Salad, and Fruit. After lunch some groups did archery while others did the zipline. Then, they switched. Following those rotations, the groups did rotations of the Challenge Course and tie-dying. The dinner menu included pasta with marinara sauce, meatballs, soup, salad, fruit and cake for dessert! The evening activity was the astronomy night hike. This week we started on a Wednesday instead of a Monday because it was Veterans Day. On Wednesday Mr.Moon taught our class instead of Mrs Geoghegan because she had her baby on Saturday and his name is Bryce!
On Wednesday we didn’t have an assembly. For a good part of the morning we did timed tests. The timed tests we did were addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and mixed. In social studies we learned about the old kingdom in Egypt and how people got prepared for their afterlife. On Thursday, we practiced our Blanca flor skit. It was pretty fun doing the skit. At P.E. we played go fetch. It’s a game where we throw a ball and the other team goes and fetch. On Friday we performed our play Blanca Flor. I, as in Zander, stuttered a lot because I was nervous. But in the middle part of the play I got the hang of it. After lunch we rewatched our Blanca Flor play and there were a lot of mistakes. On Monday we about the order of Operations in math. We had to simplify the expression using the order of operations. Then in S.S with Mr. Moon we started learning about the Egyptians.
In reading we read Blanca Flor and made skits about it. It’s a story about a girl who is a slave to a man called Don Ricardo and a man named Juanito who tries to save her. Don Ricardo gives him three hard jobs for Juanito to do and if he does all of them, he would let both of them go. In Computer lab we finished our Red Ribbon Week writing and our About Me writing too. We had no library because people were voting in the library. On Wednesday our class went to the morning Assembly and Marcus won our student of the week for being a great student. In P.E. we played a game called Catch 5 were you try to catch a football 5 times to score 1 point. We really liked that game and we also want to play that game again . Then we had tech in the Computer lab and went on a new website called GoAnimate, where you make an animation. Our class went to Mr. Pacak’s class for science and had a test on soil and weathering. We had a very exciting week at Lake Forest Elementary School. Monday was the start of Red Ribbon Week and we had Backwards Day. Tuesday was a very special day because we had twin day. We also had an assembly where two police officers came to school and talked to us about the importance of drug safety and a drug free lifestyle. On Wednesday it was red day and there was red all over campus. We also had our regular Wednesday assembly and Elias was named student of the month. Thursday was the craziest day for the sixth graders. It was caveman and cavewoman day. It was also crazy hair day. The sixth graders learned all about how cave people lived; we played games, performed skits ,and even ate like cavemen. Friday was the best day of all because it was Halloween and there was no school! This week at Lake Forest Elementary in Mr. Moon/Geoghegan’s class was great week with many fun activities. We had crazy hat/sock day in which many students participated. In science this week we learned about soil and its characteristics such as crumbly or sticky, its color, if it sinks or floats, powdery, moist or dry, soft or hard, sandy...etc. In addition we also learned about the rock cycle and how rocks go from one stage to the next. In Social Studies this week we learned about how the Assyrians took control over Babylon. Also that the Chaldeans built Babylon with Nebuchadnezzar. That the Phoenicians grew rich because of trade of fine goods. They also developed the alphabet. In Math we briefly reviewed basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. We also started learning about algebraic expressions. In PE numbers 1-11 did yoga with Ms.Cheon, #12-22 played softball with Mrs. Obermeyer. #23-33 played soccer with Mr.Pacak. With the PE teachers we did the Pacer Run Challenge. Zander ran the most laps in our class with 78. We read about the Japanese internment camps that were formed after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and what happened after they let all the Japanese Americans go home.
This week at Lake Forest Elementary School, Mr. Moon/Mrs. Geoghegan’s class did lots of fun activities. On Tuesday all the six graders had P.E in the morning and we had an awesome time to play all the fun activities that the teachers let us play. Wednesday was really fantastic because it was early out day and Connor D. was student of the week he was awarded for being a fantastic student of the week. In Social Studies we experienced what it was like in ancient days where a pencil and paper did not exist so we got to pretend to be Sumerians and we used clay and a stylus to draw the symbols people would use to write. Thursday was a normal day. We read our Current Event about what has happened during the month and there were some interesting current events like how to avoid getting Ebola, the fish with human teeth, cars made out of 3D-printers and many more. After lunch, we had P.E. and the boys got to play basketball kickball and the girls got to play Baseball dodgeball and it was really amazing. This was a really fun week to be in school and to learn about history, math, and current events.
In math we learned about greatest common factors, integers, and how to use t charts. In language arts we learned about subjects and predicates, simple subjects, and plural nouns. For social studies we learned about archaeologists, why people study history, and the ice age. For science we learned about how to cut index cards into hats and the four spheres of the earth. Some other things we did are a 6th grade flash mob to the song happy, paper blogs with our table groups, and we wrote our current events. We picked this week to do weekly recap, because Thursday was our fall recess day and we had no school so it was one less day to write about.
