During December, the students of LFE got to experience nature and science by going to Outdoor Science School. Though not far from home, the camp site, near Irvine lake provided an exciting opportunity to learn about science and participate in fun activities!

The morning started out with scrambled eggs, bacon, and English muffins. Afterwards the students went on a geology hike and learned about weathering and erosion. For lunch we had sandiwiches, chips and soup. In the afternoon they got to perform exciting experiments as part of wacky science and to learn about ranching and locally grown foods, they got to pick vegetables and fruits and taste freshly-squeezed orange juice. For dinner we had BBQ chicken, beans, corn-on-the-cob and brownies for dessert. The evening activity was a night hike finished up by a campfire, skits and s'mores! Day two started out with a breakfast of scrambled eggs, tater tots, and ham. After a hike up to the top of the nearby hill, the students returned for a lunch of chicken wings and pizza. There were also salads, soups and celery sticks available. In the afternoon the groups did whichever activities they didn't do yesterday. For dinner we had enchiladas, rice, beans and carrots. The evening activity was square-dancing in the dining hall. We arrived here at Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center a little after 10:00 to a wonderful greeting from the staff.
The students spent the first hour gathering belongings and settling in their cabins followed by some opening activities, safety Rules and expectations. For lunch the menu was Tacos and Soup, Salad, and Fruit. After lunch some groups did archery while others did the zipline. Then, they switched. Following those rotations, the groups did rotations of the Challenge Course and tie-dying. The dinner menu included pasta with marinara sauce, meatballs, soup, salad, fruit and cake for dessert! The evening activity was the astronomy night hike. |
